Glucosamine

  • Glucosamine is commonly used to relieve the pain from osteoarthritis
  • Whilst some studies have shown that it is just as effective as Non steroidal antii-inflammtory Drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Overall, results are conflicting on their effectiveness
  • Some of the side effects of Glucosamine are:
    • Constipation
    • Diarrhoea
    • Drowsiness
    • abdominal pain and discomfort
    • Headache
    • Heartburn
    • Nausea
    • Rash
  • It is available from pharmacies, health food shops in a variety of salt forms, products and strengths.
  • These may not be equivalent to those that are studied in clinical trials and different amongs each other
  • People who are allergic to shellfish should take care when taking glucosamine
  • Some Glucosamine products are made from shellfish and may contain proteins that can cause an allergic reaction
